Amp becomes free for developers who bring their own models
The Amp coding agent no longer charges fees or sets limits for people using their own model subscriptions or API keys. It will make its money from the remote machines agents run on.
The Amp coding agent overhauled its pricing on 13 September. Users who bring their own model subscription or API key, and run the agent on their own computer, no longer pay Amp anything.
What changed
A monthly plan is no longer required to use a ChatGPT subscription with Amp. People who bring their own keys (BYOK) pay no token fees and face no usage limits. The only exception is the Enterprise tier.
Amp now earns its money from what it calls orbs: remote computers where agents run independently and in parallel. Anyone who does not want orbs can install a runner on their own machine and run their agents for free. Those who choose to pay for model inference through Amp are charged with no markup.
The tiers
Hobby: free. Orbs are pay-as-you-go; runners cost nothing.
Individual: $20 a month, including 45,000 minutes of orb time. Amp says members on this tier get an average discount of 60% to 65% on their usage.
Teams: no extra charge. Members can sit on different tiers and share threads, plugins and pooled credits. If at least one member is on a paid tier, the whole workspace gets SAML/OIDC single sign-on for free.
Enterprise: custom pricing, with corporate features such as spend limits, audit logs and IP allowlisting.
Data retention and new providers
Amp is now contractually extending its zero and minimal data retention policy to every user. The company says the policy always applied to everyone, but until now only Enterprise customers had it guaranteed in writing.
Paid members also get early access to more BYOK providers: OpenRouter, Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Agent Platform (formerly Vertex AI), Azure Foundry, Vercel AI Gateway and Cloudflare AI Gateway.
Ollama joins in
On the same day, Ollama announced that its cloud models can be used in Amp through the new model routing, so Amp users can plug Ollama's cloud models into their agents without extra fees.
