Perplexity's on-device agent arrives on Windows
Perplexity added Portable Computer, the local version of its agent, to the Windows app; it needs an RTX GPU with 24GB or more of VRAM.
Perplexity has added Portable Computer, the on-device version of its Perplexity Computer agent, to its Windows app. It runs on compatible NVIDIA GeForce RTX PCs and RTX PRO Workstations, extending support that already existed for NVIDIA DGX Spark systems and RTX PCs running Linux.
The agent plans and carries out multistep tasks: it analyses data, pulls together information across files and handles recurring work. Sensitive information stays on the device, and work completed locally does not consume Perplexity Computer credits.
It asks before going to the cloud
When a task calls for more advanced reasoning, Portable Computer can identify that cloud support is needed and asks the user for permission before sending anything off-device. The app combines local and cloud AI in one place, alongside Computer tools such as the built-in browser and the proprietary SPACE sandbox.
Setup does not require researching models or configuring the software stack local AI usually demands. The app ships with a local model, such as Qwen 3.8 27B, post-trained to work with Perplexity Computer and optimised for RTX GPUs.
Connectors and hardware requirement
Connectors for Microsoft Outlook, OneDrive, Word, Google Drive, Gmail, Slack and GitHub open the agent to the files and apps people already use daily.
Portable Computer works on GeForce RTX and RTX PRO GPUs with 24GB or more of VRAM. NVIDIA says DGX Station support is expected soon.
Details are in the NVIDIA blog post.
