Cloudflare's new cf command line tool opens its entire API to AI agents
Cloudflare has released cf, an open-source command line tool that puts its entire API in one place, as an open beta. It covers more than 3,000 operations, outputs JSON by default and lets agents search for commands in plain language. Wrangler will hand over to cf over time.
Cloudflare released cf, a command line tool that brings its entire API into one place, as an open beta on September 28, 2026. The company's reasoning is that its current tool, Wrangler, is increasingly used by AI agents rather than people. According to Cloudflare, the agents' share has grown fast over the past year, and agents use many more distinct commands than humans.
What cf does
Wrangler offered commands for about 280 operations; cf covers all of the more than 3,000 operations in the Cloudflare API. The commands are not written by hand but generated from the API definition. That lets an agent use one tool to set up and deploy a Worker, monitor it, protect it with Cloudflare Access, buy a domain and put a firewall in front of it. It installs with npm i -g cf and is open source on GitHub under the Apache 2.0 and MIT licenses.
Changes made for agents
JSON is the default output: readable for people and condensed for agents to save context. cf cli search finds commands that match a plain-language request, and agents learn about it the first time they run --help. For operations that need personal details, such as buying a domain, the API's requirements are turned into validated forms. Configuration now lives in a TypeScript file, cloudflare.config.ts, so agents like Claude Code and Codex can catch mistakes as they type. Cloudflare says some of its own long internal configurations became noticeably shorter in this format. On the development side, the tool is built on Vite.
Forge, open-sourced the same day, is the pipeline that generates these commands. It produces SDKs, command line tools and documentation from API definitions and is licensed under Apache 2.0. Cloudflare says that over the coming months it will also generate its API docs and its TypeScript, Rust, Python, Go, PHP and Terraform SDKs with Forge.
cf is still a beta, and the new configuration format covers only Workers for now. Rust and Python Workers, and JavaScript Workers that use esbuild, are still handed off to Wrangler. When the beta ends, a final major version of Wrangler will point users to cf and keep getting maintenance for 18 months; no end date for the beta has been given. Before giving agents such a broad tool, it is wise to keep API key permissions narrow. To see how it behaves in real work, it is worth following the experience of independent developers.
