Cloudflare makes Python Workers generally available
Python is now a fully supported language on Cloudflare's developer platform. FastAPI, Django and Flask apps, PostgreSQL and MySQL connections and AI libraries such as openai and langchain now run on Python Workers.
Cloudflare has made Python Workers generally available. Two years after it launched as a beta, Python is now a first-class, fully supported language on Cloudflare's developer platform, alongside JavaScript and TypeScript. Developers can run their Python code and familiar libraries directly on Cloudflare's global network.
What Python Workers are
Cloudflare Workers is a serverless platform that runs code on the Cloudflare server closest to the user. There are no servers to set up, scale or load balance; the platform handles that. Python Workers let you write for this platform in Python. The Python interpreter runs compiled to WebAssembly, through the Pyodide project.
What is new
- Platform services straight from Python: Services such as Workers AI, R2 storage, the D1 database, Queues, Workflows and Durable Objects can now be used with plain Python syntax, with no JavaScript conversion code in between.
- Web frameworks: Apps built with FastAPI, Django and Flask run on Workers through a small connector from Cloudflare. Any Python web framework that uses the ASGI or WSGI standard is supported.
- PostgreSQL and MySQL: Cloudflare made network connections, which normally fail inside WebAssembly, work through its own runtime. That lets familiar drivers such as asyncpg and aiomysql connect to relational databases through Hyperdrive.
- AI libraries: Packages such as openai, langchain and mcp now run inside Python Workers, so AI agents and MCP servers can be written and deployed in Python.
How package support is growing
Python packages with C, C++ or Rust extensions have to be compiled separately for WebAssembly. Cloudflare proposed a common standard for this, PEP 783, and the proposal was accepted. It gives package maintainers a way to publish WebAssembly builds as well. The company says it is working with maintainers of major packages, and that users can request missing packages on Discord or GitHub.
How to get started
Cloudflare's developer documentation has a dedicated section for Python Workers, and most code examples across the docs now come in Python as well as TypeScript. The company's examples repository includes ready-made projects such as an image generator built on Queues and Workflows, a real-time Bluesky stream processor, an MCP server and a RAG system built with Vectorize.
Things to keep in mind
- Because Python Workers run on WebAssembly, some packages with native extensions cannot be used yet. Check that the packages you need are supported before you start.
- Cloudflare says its next steps are better performance and memory use, and support for more packages.
