Claude Code will now wrap up gracefully when you hit the 5-hour limit
When you hit the 5-hour usage limit mid-task, Claude Code now tries to find a clean stopping point instead of cutting off mid-edit. It uses a small, fixed allowance from your weekly limit to do so.
Anthropic has changed how Claude Code behaves when it hits a usage limit. On subscription plans, Claude Code works within rolling 5-hour usage windows with a weekly limit on top. Until now, hitting the 5-hour limit mid-task could stop the work where it stood, sometimes in the middle of editing a file.
According to the ClaudeDevs account, Claude Code will now try to find a graceful stopping point instead. It gets a small, fixed allowance taken from your weekly limit to wrap up what it can before stopping.
The feature is rolling out in stages. According to the announcement, it is available once a week on Pro plans, and each time a 5-hour limit is hit on Max and Team Premium plans. If you need to keep going after the wrap-up, you can continue with extra usage.
The change aims to avoid files left broken by half-finished edits during long coding tasks. Because the wrap-up allowance comes out of the weekly limit, users who hit the limit often will see their weekly usage go down a little faster.
