Amazon blocks Meta's Muse agent from shopping on its store
Amazon has cut off Meta's Muse AI agent from buying on its platform, saying unauthorised agent access breaks its conditions of use.
Amazon has blocked Meta's Muse AI agent from shopping on its store on behalf of users. GeekWire reports that a popup began appearing for Muse users on Sunday, stating that "continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon's Conditions of Use, to which our customers have agreed."
According to the same report, Meta did not tell Amazon that Muse would access its store. Amazon also raised privacy and security concerns, saying Muse does not identify itself while browsing and appears to capture customer credentials.
An unnamed Amazon spokesperson told GeekWire that third-party applications offering to make purchases on behalf of customers from other businesses should operate openly and respect service provider decisions about whether to take part.
What Meta said
When Meta launched Muse earlier this month, it said the agent cannot see secure login details or card payment information. The Verge says it used Muse in testing to buy tank tops from Amazon while other products sat in the basket. Privacy questions have surfaced since launch, with reports that Muse can read the contents of user messages even without the relevant access permission enabled.
A wider pattern
The block is Amazon's latest move against rival agentic AI services. It sued Perplexity last November to keep its platform out of the Comet shopping experience, and a judge sided with Perplexity in August. Since July, Amazon's confirmation emails have also become sparser, dropping item names and product images to limit what external AI services can mine.
