The Model Hardware Standard research preview covers programmable devices from microscopes to robotic arms. The company says integration drops from weeks to hours, and the standard is model-agnostic.

Anthropic opens a standard for AI agents to operate laboratory equipment

Anthropic has begun the first phase of a research preview for the Model Hardware Standard (MHS), a specification for AI agents to operate physical equipment. The preview has opened to a first group of scientific research labs and advanced manufacturers.

The problem it addresses: getting software to talk to a piece of lab equipment is separate work for every instrument. MHS provides a shared definition and works with any device that has a programmable interface. By the company's figure, integration that took weeks or months drops to hours. The equipment covered includes microscopes, liquid handlers and robotic arms, and an agent can drive several instruments at once.

The standard is model-agnostic: any agent harness can reach it through standard protocols such as the Model Context Protocol, so it is not tied to Claude. Anthropic says it plans to open source the standard in future.

Several organisations are taking part. Amazon Web Services is supporting MHS through Strands Robots and giving participants a pre-release version of the package. Automata is adding MHS support to LINQ, its lab automation platform. Doosan Robotics is testing the standard with its robotic arms. MBF Bioscience is building an MHS driver for ScanImage, the software running laser-scanning microscopes in hundreds of neuroscience labs.
