Bengaluru-based Alteon closed a $2.5 million pre-seed round led by Lachy Groom to build autonomous aircraft powered by dynamic soaring, the technique albatrosses use.

Alteon, a Bengaluru startup, said it raised $2.5 million in a pre-seed round to develop autonomous aircraft that harvest energy from wind shear over the ocean and stay aloft for more than a year. Solo investor Lachy Groom led the round, with Together Fund participating. Founder Samay Sanghvi, 20, said Groom decided to invest within the first 30 minutes of their first meeting.

The approach is dynamic soaring, the manoeuvre albatrosses use to pull energy from the wind by repeatedly crossing between air layers moving at different speeds. Alteon's first design is a fixed-wing aircraft with roughly a three-metre wingspan that will skim close to the ocean surface, climb, turn through faster-moving air and repeat the cycle. Sanghvi said the company eventually plans to run its propellers as turbines, converting part of that energy into electricity to recharge onboard batteries. The initial application is maritime surveillance.

What is still unproven

The startup has not yet shown that its aircraft can sustain flight on energy harvested through dynamic soaring. In a recent test over the Bay of Bengal, the autonomous flight system completed seven O-shaped cycles on its own at more than 62 miles per hour, flying within one metre of the water. The next milestone is what Sanghvi calls "energy-neutral dynamic soaring": staying up with propulsion switched off.

Dr. Gabriel Bousquet, an aerospace and robotics engineer who researched dynamic soaring during his PhD at MIT, called the low-altitude flight over water a "promising first result" but said the harder task is reliably extracting enough energy from real-world winds, while the aircraft copes with turbulence, waves, spray, rain and changing light. Dr. Bharath Swaminathan, whose IIT Madras PhD examined the stability of dynamic soaring, said the physics is well established and called the effort commendable, adding that staying airborne for several days would already be a major achievement. He noted that local wind shear and turbulence can vary widely, and some problems will only surface in real flight testing.

Groom acknowledged the risk: "Ambitious problems are always going to come with risks." Alteon has 20 people in Bengaluru and a 10,000-square-foot facility, builds four to five aircraft a week and logged more than 200 test flights in the past 30 days. Full report at TechCrunch.
