Polimill taps OpenAI models to build public AI infrastructure for Japanese municipalities

OpenAI has published a note on Polimill, a Japanese company working on artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure for the public sector. According to the announcement, Polimill uses OpenAI's GPT models and Codex to help municipalities search and use administrative knowledge, while also speeding up its own development work with the same tools.

That is the extent of what has been disclosed. The announcement does not name the municipalities involved, nor does it give figures on scale, cost or rollout timing.

Why it matters

Administrative knowledge in local government tends to sit across scattered documents, regulations and archives, and access often depends on how experienced the individual officer is. Polimill's approach hands that search task to language models. The use of Codex points to a second goal: shortening the company's own software development cycle.

For the details and Polimill's own account, see OpenAI's page on the project.
