Three novice hikers from Roseville, California, were stranded on Mount Shasta after planning their climb with Google's Gemini assistant and were rescued the next morning, according to a Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office statement reported by [CBS Sacramento](https://www.cbsnews.com/sacramento/news/mount-shasta-hikers-rescued-california-ai-incorrect-instructions/?ref=globalfeed.ai) and ABC News.

The hikers told the sheriff's office they had relied "heavily on Google's Gemini AI" for the route and what to pack. "This was a critical mistake; Gemini suggested they take far less food and water than the group needed, which became abundantly clear when their planned 8-hour climb turned into a multi-day ordeal," the statement says. Google did not respond to ABC News' request for comment.

## Timeline

- The three young men camped on Saturday, 29 August, at about 8,400 feet (roughly 2,560 meters).
- They left for the summit at 3:00 a.m. on Sunday with daypacks, reaching it at 7:00 p.m.
- They decided to descend in the dark. About an hour in, on the Clear Creek route, they lost the trail and called sheriff's dispatch for directions.
- They then went off-route into Mud Creek Canyon on the south face and became stuck. One hiker fell in the night and hurt his knee; the group spent it in the canyon's steep creek bed.
- In the morning a US Forest Service Climbing Rangers team reached them, joined by the sheriff's search and rescue team; all three walked back to the trailhead on Monday without trouble.

## The sheriff's office's advice

The statement advises turning around by noon for enough daylight, stopping often to verify the route, and not relying solely on a cell phone or GPS device. It adds: "It is always advised to call the local USFS Mount Shasta Ranger Station for the most accurate information before your trip and never rely solely on AI for trip planning."

## For the corporate reader

A chatbot, Gemini included, cannot be the sole source for decisions on which lives depend: routes, safety, logistics. Inside an organization the same advice becomes one rule: field teams and employees verify AI output against an authoritative source, be it a ranger station, the manufacturer's documentation or an internal procedure.
