The US Department of War (formerly the Department of Defense) has launched ChatGPT Mil, OpenAI's military-tailored edition, on GenAI.mil, the Department's generative AI platform. According to [the official release](https://www.war.gov/News/Releases/Release/Article/4586352/department-of-war-launches-openais-chatgpt-mil-on-genaimil/?ref=globalfeed.ai), this marks the adoption phase of an enterprise partnership established with OpenAI in 2025, with a reach of 3 million military and civilian personnel.

The technical framing matters: ChatGPT Mil is accredited for Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) at Impact Level 5 (IL5), meaning it is cleared for documents that are sensitive but not classified. The experience deliberately mirrors commercial ChatGPT: the core is chat, files, projects and custom GPTs, with more features sequenced over time. The Department says the system is built above all for document-heavy unclassified work.

GenAI.mil itself opened in December 2025 under the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO), debuting with Google's Gemini for Government. With ChatGPT Mil added, the platform stops being a single-model experiment and becomes one of the largest enterprise AI deployments in the world.

The bigger picture: for AI labs, government and defense are now the fastest-growing customer segment. In the same week, OpenAI's models landed both on Amazon's cloud in India with in-country inferencing and inside the Pentagon's secure network, a sign that the "every model, everywhere" era now covers the state as well.
