The leak hunters' September calendar: Fable 5.1, Gemini 3.8 Flash and Astra all look imminent
According to accounts that watch cloud API registries, Anthropic's Fable 5.1 is registered in Bedrock, Gemini 3.8 Flash is deployed, and September 3 is whispered for Astra. Registrations are real signals; dates are guesses.
The AI world's most curious species is at it again: the leak hunters who watch the model registries of cloud platforms. Their method is simple and can be surprisingly accurate: companies register a model on infrastructure like Bedrock or Vertex before launch, and the hunters catch those entries the moment they surface. The Astra rumors we covered came from the same ecosystem.
This weekend two hunters stacked up three claims. Pankaj Kumar wrote that Anthropic's Claude Fable 5.1 has been registered in the Amazon Bedrock API, that this suggests the launch process is underway, and floated September 1; he added OpenAI's Astra for two or three days later. Lyra claimed Gemini 3.8 Flash has been deployed and would be released the next day; per Kumar, 3.8 Flash fixes many of the issues Gemini 3.7 Flash struggled with, with a lot of the slop cut down. The posts passed 40,000 combined views within hours.
Let us draw the honest frame: an API registration is a real signal; the model has genuinely been loaded onto the infrastructure, and these entries usually appear shortly before launch. A date prediction, though, is speculation; a registered model can sit unlaunched for weeks. None of the three companies has confirmed anything.
Still, the picture is clear: if true, the first week of September opens with back-to-back moves from Anthropic, Google and OpenAI. If the hunters' calendar holds, a wild week awaits; if not, the registrations remain, and the countdown merely runs longer.
