Roland has moved into generative AI music with **Melody Flip**, a plugin for digital audio workstations (DAW). It ships with roughly 250 "Palettes", themed collections of musical ideas sorted by genre.

You can start from nothing and ask it to generate any combination of melody, chord progression, bassline or drums. You can also feed it a reference track and let it build on the melodic ideas found there.

## How it differs from Suno and Udio

As The Verge reports, Melody Flip does not produce finished songs with vocals and full arrangements the way Suno or Udio do. It returns simple musical loops intended as a starting point. Control over the output is limited: there is no text prompt, you pick a genre, note density, BPM and key, and take what comes back.

The genre list is granular, ranging from "80s disco" and "90s R&B" to narrower options such as "Kawaii Future Bass" and "Anime World".

The bundled sounds are mostly general MIDI tones reminiscent of 1990s video games, which points to the intended workflow: export the MIDI data into your DAW and pair it with more capable synth plugins.

## Where Roland stands

According to The Verge, Roland had regained ground recently after years of alienating customers with its messy Roland Cloud subscription service. The P-6 Creative Sampler, SH-4d and Gaia 2 addressed major gaps in the lineup, and last year's TR-1000 paid tribute to the company's analog heritage. The same assessment notes that, given the music community's general response to generative AI, Melody Flip is unlikely to win Roland similar goodwill.
