On 17 September, OpenAI introduced Astra for Law, a configuration of its GPT-6 Astra model built for legal work. It is offered as a foundation that law firms and legal-technology companies can build their own products and workflows on.

## What it offers

At its core is a legal search index spanning more than 230 million sources: US case law, statutes, regulations, court rules and administrative decisions, with new sources added daily. OpenAI says the goal is to cut the made-up citations, the hallucinated references, that have embarrassed lawyers using general chatbots.

## Privacy and access

Law firms reach it through a Trusted Access program with privacy controls including zero data retention. API customers such as Harvey and Legora can build their own products on top of the model. The move reads as OpenAI's clearest bid yet to become the default AI provider for America's largest law firms.
