Neuralink engineers visited a participant in VOICE, the company's speech restoration study, at home for a 72-hour development sprint. The company announced it in [a post and video](https://neuralink.com/updates/72-hour-voice-hackathon/?ref=globalfeed.ai) on October 29, 2026\. The next day, Elon Musk wrote [on X](https://x.com/elonmusk/status/2116018780111597911?ref=globalfeed.ai) that Neuralink's first product is called Telepathy and that it enables high-speed communication with computers or humans simply by thinking. He added that output bandwidth will vastly exceed the fastest human speech or typing in a few years.

## Why the engineers went to the participant's home

According to the company, none of the engineers building the software has an implant, so only participants can feel the difference between a good design and a bad one. Brain signals also change with fatigue, attention and how speech is imagined. Working beside the participant cut feedback loops that normally take weeks down to hours. In the video, the team says it made two to three weeks of progress in three days and tested more than 30 app versions.

## Eight features tried in 72 hours

- Detecting the intent to speak: A button used to start and stop recording. The system now aims to sense from the signals when the person is trying to speak.
- Live signal views: The participant can see which forms of attempted speech produce stronger signals. The company says this improved decoding.
- An agent by thought: Thinking "Hey Neuralink" and then a task sets a Grok-based agent to work on the computer.
- The Bloom app: Neuralink's speech app was tried in daily life outside the lab.
- An iPhone keyboard: Dictation from the implant can be typed into any app.
- Faster correction: Decoding mistakes can be fixed with a few gestures and keyboard suggestions.
- Speaking from the lock screen: Speech can start without unlocking the phone.
- Phone calls: Speech generated from the implant goes directly into the call's microphone. An optional greeting saying the caller uses an assistive device was also tested.

The moment the company highlighted was the phone call. The participant could previously take calls only through his wife, and the new setup aims to let him answer them himself. For someone who has lost the ability to speak, answering their own phone is a big step.

## Where the VOICE study stands

According to its [ClinicalTrials.gov record](https://clinicaltrials.gov/study/NCT07224256?ref=globalfeed.ai), VOICE is an early feasibility study that began on October 3, 2025\. It targets adults with severe, irreversible speech impairment who also have impaired upper limb function. The record lists conditions such as ALS, stroke and spinal cord injury, an estimated 6 participants and a primary completion date of October 2028\. The study is still recruiting.

On speed, the latest figure from Neuralink is one ALS participant reaching 75 words per minute in the first week. In January 2026, the company set conversational speed of 140 words per minute as its goal. Passing half of that goal in the first week is hopeful progress.

## Neuralink already used the Telepathy name in January

Neuralink's [January 2026 post](https://neuralink.com/updates/two-years-of-telepathy/?ref=globalfeed.ai) already called Telepathy its first product, describing it as a way for people with paralysis to control computers, phones and robotic limbs by thought. The company said at that time that 21 participants were enrolled in its trials. Musk's post shows he expects the product to go much further on communication speed. The progress is promising for people living with conditions such as ALS, stroke and spinal cord injury.
