Lambda, an AI cloud company that buys computing chips and rents them out to businesses, has raised $1 billion in private, short-dated debt to purchase Nvidia AI chips that it will lease to Microsoft, Bloomberg reports. The deal was arranged by JP Morgan Chase.

According to Bloomberg, the short maturity of the debt signals that Lambda expects to deploy the chips quickly and start generating revenue from them, allowing it to repay the borrowing fairly rapidly out of incoming cash.

## A run of loans tied to specific customers

The transaction is the latest in a series of loans Lambda has used to fund GPU infrastructure for named customers. In May, the company closed a $1 billion secured credit facility. This week it announced the closing of a $926 million loan to fund Nvidia GB300 GPUs; one of Nvidia's newest chip models; for a deployment it is under contract to provide to Nvidia.

The $1 billion private debt deal arrives as Lambda is reportedly in talks for a $3 billion pre-IPO round. Last November the company raised $1.5 billion in venture capital at a $5.43 billion post-money valuation, per PitchBook data.

## Debt fuelling the wider build-out

Lambda is not alone in leaning on debt to finance the AI boom. Data compiled by Bloomberg indicates that banks and technology companies have raised more than $400 billion in AI-related debt globally so far in 2026.
