**Google Cloud** introduced the **Gemini agent**, an agent built for work, at its Gemini at Work 2026 event on October 8, 2026\. An AI agent is software that takes a goal, plans the steps and carries out the work on its own using tools and company systems. According to Google Cloud's announcement, the Gemini agent answers questions, prepares documents and images, writes and runs code from a single prompt box, and returns finished work inside the apps people already use.

The most notable part of the announcement is coworker agents. When a team describes the role it needs, Gemini creates a persistent agent for it. According to Google, that agent gets its own Google Workspace account: its own email address, calendar, Drive storage and an entry in the company directory. The goal is a team member that can follow ongoing work over days, such as a project manager for a group or an analyst in a finance role.

## Long-running work continues in the cloud

According to Google Cloud's announcement, the Gemini agent runs in the cloud and keeps the same memory, context and personalization across devices. Users can assign it work, schedule tasks or have it act when an event occurs. Jobs that take hours or days keep running after the user closes their laptop. For larger jobs, the agent creates temporary sub-agents, each with its own identity, and runs the steps in parallel or in sequence.

Google says the agent picks the right model for each job. According to the announcement, it currently chooses among Google's Gemini models and Anthropic's Claude models, with other private and open models to be added. The agent works inline in Gmail, Drive, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Chat and Calendar. It can also be reached from the command line, Microsoft 365 and Slack, and it supports connectors to systems such as Confluence, Jira, Salesforce, ServiceNow, BigQuery and Snowflake, along with MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers.

## Agents work under their own identity

Google compares working with a coworker agent to working with a colleague. Team members can add it to a Chat space, @mention it to hand over a task or tag it in a comment in a Docs file. The agent can suggest edits in a document and reply in a comment thread, and its changes appear under its own name in version history.

According to Google's announcement, the agent acts under its own identity and sees only what is shared with it. Its access follows the sharing and membership settings the team already uses. Each agent has a cryptographically attested identity managed with least-privilege permissions, and security administrators approve its fine-grained permissions. Every action is written to an audit trail attributed to the agent. Agents run in an Agent Sandbox with its own network boundary, and all traffic passes through Agent Gateway, which Google describes as an AI network firewall. This lets a company write a single policy for every agent; in Google's example, the policy stops agents from opening documents classified as confidential.

## Who it is for and when

The announcement is aimed mainly at organizations that use Google Workspace and Google Cloud. Google also announced industry versions of the Gemini agent: the financial services and legal versions are in preview, while government, healthcare and retail versions are coming soon. On cost, Google describes routing that sends each job to the most cost-effective model that meets its needs, plus spend caps per project; when a cap is reached, the agent pauses until someone resumes it. Current prices are on Google Cloud's site.

The announcement does not give a general availability date, pricing or the Workspace plans that will include the Gemini agent and coworker agents. Giving agents their own email accounts and document access means organizations should review their sharing settings and permission policies in advance. The announcement also does not cover how reliable the agent is on multi-day jobs or how well it handles languages other than English.
