- Description: Garden Reads is an ebook reader that runs Google's Gemma 4 on the phone via LiteRT-LM: it attaches the book's metadata and the current page to every question by itself, and steers clear of plot points you have not reached yet.

A developer on r/LocalLLaMA has released an ebook reader that never touches the internet: [Garden Reads](https://gardenreads.app/?ref=globalfeed.ai) runs Google's Gemma 4 model (the in-app screen shows the E4B variant) directly on the phone through the LiteRT-LM runtime. The project reached a wider audience when Google's Paige Bailey shared it on X.

According to the developer's post, two details separate it from the usual "we bolted a chatbot onto a book" experiments. The first is context handling: when a reader selects a word or a passage and asks a question, Garden Reads attaches the book's metadata and the currently open page to the request on its own, so there is no need to explain which book you are in or where you are in it. The second is spoiler protection: the model deliberately avoids describing plot points you have not reached yet.

Because everything happens on the device, there is no API key and no account to create; the site also stresses that there is no tracking or data collection. The one exception is Drive sync, which the user has to switch on. Marketed under the tagline "Read. Listen. Understand.", the app is live on Google Play; the core version is free, and extras such as offline dictionaries unlock with a one-time Pro purchase.

## The everyday face of the on-device wave

Between SparkLLM's 1-million-context phone model and OpenClaw, on-device AI produced a steady stream of news this week; Garden Reads is the example that lands on a daily habit, reading a book. For local models, the book companion idea gives a concrete answer to the long-standing question of what they are actually for: a reading aid that knows the context of your page and reports to no one.

The reading side is not bare either: an audiobook player with Audiobookshelf integration, a Zen mode that hides notifications and the clock, dictionary and translation tools, plus notes and highlights all ship in the package. The developer gives no name on the site; for now the project goes by its r/LocalLLaMA signature.
