Anthropic has announced that **Claude Code** cloud sessions are out of research preview and generally available. In a cloud session, Claude Code runs on Anthropic's infrastructure, so a task keeps going after you start it and close your laptop.

## What a cloud session is

Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent for software development. It normally runs on the developer's own machine, in the terminal or the desktop app. According to the Claude Code docs, each cloud session gets its own isolated virtual machine. Your GitHub repository is cloned into it, and common tools such as programming languages and databases come preinstalled. Several tasks can run in parallel.

## How to start one

You can start a cloud session at claude.ai/code, from the Code tab in the Claude mobile app, from the desktop app, or with `claude --cloud` in the terminal. According to the docs, the cloud machine clones your project from GitHub, so push recent local changes first.

## One-time credit

Anthropic is giving existing subscribers a one-time credit to try cloud sessions: $100 on Pro and $250 on Max. It can be claimed at claude.ai/code or with `/claim-credit` in the terminal. The deadline to claim is 7 October, and the credits expire on 4 November.

In a follow-up post, ClaudeDevs clarified that cloud sessions run on your regular Pro or Max plan, like the rest of Claude Code. The credit is an optional extra: cloud sessions spend it first, then fall back to normal plan usage.

Being able to keep working with the laptop closed makes long-running tasks independent of the developer's machine. It does require the project to be on GitHub and kept up to date, and the credit has to be used within its time window.
