# Apple's Cook era is over: John Ternus takes charge as CEO, and his first post on X is one word, 'hello'

The handover Apple announced in April took effect yesterday. Tim Cook's last day as chief executive was 31 August, and as of 1 September John Ternus is Apple's CEO, as set out in [the company's April announcement](https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2026/04/tim-cook-to-become-apple-executive-chairman-john-ternus-to-become-apple-ceo/?ref=globalfeed.ai). Ternus marked the moment on X, where his first post contained a single word: **"hello"**.

## What changed on 1 September

Under the plan, approved unanimously by Apple's board after long-term succession planning, Cook becomes executive chairman and Arthur Levinson moves from non-executive chairman to independent chair. Cook stayed on through the summer to manage the transition and will keep helping on specific matters, including relations with policymakers worldwide. Ternus joined Apple in 2001 on the product design team, became vice president of hardware engineering in 2013 and senior vice president in 2021, running hardware for the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and AirPods. In April he said he felt fortunate to have spent nearly his whole career at Apple and to have worked under Steve Jobs.

## Fifteen years, then one word

Cook had been CEO since 2011\. By Apple's own account, market value grew from roughly $350 billion to more than $4 trillion, and annual revenue rose from $108 billion in 2011 to $416 billion in 2025\. According to 9to5Mac, Apple Park hosted a farewell dinner where Ternus and Laurene Powell Jobs spoke and OneRepublic performed.

Elon Musk quoted Ternus's "hello" with the note "New Apple CEO posting on X"; by the evening of 1 September Musk's post had passed **6.5 million views**. An Apple event is expected on 9 September; 9to5Mac expects Ternus to lead it, possibly with a foldable iPhone Ultra, the iPhone 18 Pro and a new Apple Watch, none confirmed.
