Anthropic has released **Claude Opus 5.5**, the first model in its new Claude 5.5 family. The company says it performs at the level of Claude Fable 5.1 on most work and costs 40% less to run than Opus 5 on typical workloads. It is available on all platforms from today.

## Price and speed

Input costs $4 and output $20 per million tokens, 20% below Opus 5's $5 and $25\. Cache reads, which make up most of the cost in agentic and coding work, fall from $0.50 to $0.20\. Anthropic says the model also uses fewer tokens per task and generates output more than 30% faster than Opus 5\. A fast mode of up to 2.5x speed is available in Claude Code and the Claude Platform at $8 input and $40 output per million tokens. Five-hour usage limits rise on Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans.

## Benchmarks

All results below are reported by Anthropic. On Terminal-Bench 4.0, Opus 5.5 scores 66.4%, against 55.8% for Fable 5.1 and 57.9% for GPT-6 Astra. On GDPval-AA v2.1, which covers real-world work across 44 occupations, it reaches 1846 Elo, ahead of Fable 5.1 at 1735 and GPT-6 Astra at 1542\. It does not lead everywhere: GPT-6 Astra is ahead on Terminal-Bench-Science at 64.6% to 58.7%, and slightly ahead on AutomationBench at 41.4% to 40.0%. Anthropic itself notes that at this level benchmark margins are a less reliable guide, and that in its own use the gap to Fable 5.1 is narrower than the scores suggest.

## Safety and access

Opus 5.5 is Anthropic's first release since it called for pacing the frontier. External evaluators including METR tested it before release, and it posted the best score Anthropic has recorded on its automated behavioral audit. Because it is comparable to Claude Mythos 5.1 in biology and cybersecurity, it ships with safeguards similar to Fable 5.1\. Vetted organisations can apply to the Life Sciences Verification Program for biology research, and access for verified cybersecurity practitioners opens in the coming weeks.

Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 will follow in the coming weeks. OpenAI announced its GPT-6 Sol and Luna models about 90 minutes after the Opus 5.5 release.
