Anthropic opens 10,000 free and discounted Claude seats to scientists
Under a new plan for principal investigators at academic and nonprofit institutions, standard seats are free and seats with 5x usage limits cost $15 a month for one year.
Anthropic announced on 27 August that it is opening 10,000 Claude subscription seats to scientists worldwide. Under what the company calls its "Claude Team plan for scientists", standard seats are free, while seats carrying 5x usage limits cost $15 a month for one year.
To qualify, an applicant must be a principal investigator or equivalent at an academic or nonprofit research institution. Once verified, they can add the researchers in their lab to the plan.
The company says the plan spans fields from mathematics and chemistry to physics and beyond, and that it intends to expand well past the initial 10,000 seats in the coming months.
The announcement builds on two earlier efforts: Claude Science, launched in June, and the AI for Science programme, which funds research projects with free credits. According to the company, researchers can apply for up to $50,000 in credits per project under that programme.
Anthropic argues Claude is becoming more capable on problems ranging from advanced physics calculations to protein design. That assessment is the company's own; no independent measurement is offered.
