**Tabby** is an app that uses AI to automate bookkeeping for small businesses, freelancers and gig workers. You connect your bank account and credit card. Tabby reads the transactions, sorts income and expenses automatically and shows your profit and loss in real time. The app is built mainly for use on the phone.

## Who built it

Tabby's co-founder and CEO, Ahad Ali, is a US certified public accountant who has spent many years handling tax and bookkeeping for self-employed people and small businesses. In a post on why he is building Tabby, Ali sums up the problem: most small businesses put off bookkeeping until tax season, cannot afford to pay a bookkeeper every month, and have no time to learn accounting software. He argues that AI can take on most of the work, leaving the user only a few transactions to check. He is building the app with software engineer Shah Paran.

## What it does

- **Automatic categorisation:** It sorts bank and card transactions into categories such as meals, transport and utilities, and learns from your corrections.
- **Deduction finder:** It flags business expenses you may have missed at tax time.
- **Receipts and invoices:** Snap a receipt to record it, and create and send invoices.
- **Reports:** Profit and loss and tax-ready reports, which can be downloaded in formats your accountant can use.

There are dedicated setups for real estate agents, the self-employed, gig workers on platforms like Uber and DoorDash, and small teams. You can track several businesses in one place.

## How to use it

You can sign up for free on Tabby's website, and no card is needed to start. Besides the free plan there are monthly paid plans that allow more accounts and users. Current prices and plan limits are listed on the site.

## What is next

The company is preparing "Talk to Tabby", which will let users ask about their finances in plain English. Example questions on the site include "What do I owe in taxes this quarter?" and "Who hasn't paid me?"

## Things to keep in mind

- Bank connections run through Plaid and currently cover banks in the US and Canada.
- According to the company, access is read-only: Tabby sees transactions but cannot move money, and you can revoke access from your bank at any time.
- For a fuller picture, follow evaluations from independent researchers as well.
- The company says most customers keep working with their accountant for year-end filing.
